Not everyone begins a degree from a standing start. If you've studied before, worked in a related field, or picked up serious skills along the way, you might not need to cover ground you've already covered. That's the thinking behind Recognition of Prior Learning.

Credit and RPL, in plain terms

Two related things sit under this heading. Credit transfer recognises formal study you've already completed - for example, units from another institution. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) goes further and recognises skills and knowledge you've gained through work or life experience, even if you never sat an exam for them.

Either one can reduce what's left for you to complete.

How it's assessed

Credit isn't automatic, and it isn't a way around the standard. Your prior learning is measured against the actual outcomes of the units in your course.

If it genuinely matches, you may be exempt from those units. If it only partly matches, you might receive credit for some and not others. The closer and clearer the match, the stronger your case.

What you'll need

Gather your evidence early: academic transcripts, unit or subject outlines, and documentation of relevant work - position descriptions, references, and examples of what you've produced.

The clearer the evidence, the smoother the assessment. The Credit & RPL page explains how Stockdale handles applications.

Why it's worth a look

Done well, credit and RPL can save you time and money and let you start at a level that matches what you already know. Even if you're not certain you'll qualify, raise it early - it could shape your study plan from the very first week.

Frequently asked questions

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

RPL is the process of granting academic credit for skills and knowledge you've already gained through work or life experience, assessed against the learning outcomes of your course.

Can I get credit for work experience?

You may be able to. Relevant work experience can be recognised through RPL if it matches the outcomes of units in your course and you can provide suitable evidence.

How do I apply for credit or RPL at Stockdale?

You apply with supporting evidence such as transcripts, unit outlines and documentation of relevant experience. The Credit & RPL page explains the process; applying early is best.
